Owl Feathers

Talgat Alim

Legend

Not every feather belongs to a bird that can fly. Talgat Alim’s Owl Feathers came from moments when no one was allowed to speak. She gathered them rarely – only when silence grew thicker than words.

One night a woman came to her fire, asking question after question and waiting for none of the answers. She kept interrupting herself, losing her meaning in her hurry. She begged for advice, yet could not hear it.

Talgat reached for the Owl Feathers and laid them on the ground between them. The owl on her shoulder did not stir once.

“Be still,” was all she said.

A long moment passed, then another. The woman began to hear: the crackle of the wood, her own breathing, the tremor of thoughts she had drowned out with talk. She understood that the answer had been inside her all along – it had simply had no room to sound.

When she rose, Talgat gathered up the feathers.

“The owl sees because it is in no hurry to speak,” she said. “Whoever wishes to know more must first learn to be silent.”

Since then Talgat Alim has kept the Owl Feathers close – using them not to add anything, but to take away what is not needed, until the meaning can be heard on its own.
