Falcon Feathers

Tengri Agnijara

Legend

In the valley they used to say that Tengri Agnijara never told anyone which way to go – she left feathers instead. She had only three: falcon feathers, stiff, with a tuft of down at the base that trembled at the faintest breath of wind.

Late one autumn a family of travellers climbed to the pass, their mules laden with all they owned. Halfway up, the mist came down, thick as milk, so that the father could not see the head of the leading mule.

Tengri found them huddled beneath a rock.

“We’re turning back,” the father declared. “I won’t go on if I can’t see the summit.”

Tengri did not argue. She took a few steps into the whiteness and pushed a feather into a crack in the rock. Then a second, a little higher, and then a third.

“On to the next.”

They went from feather to feather. Whenever they reached the third, Tengri went back for the first and planted it ahead of them again. The children began to count them. The father stopped lifting his eyes to the heights.

By evening the mist lay below them, and above, the sky opened wide.

“You never needed to see the summit. The next feather was enough.”

To this day, travellers on the pass leave a feather in the rock for those who come after.
